Carleton University and executives of CUPE 4600-1 have agreed the university will make an immediate additional contribution of $78,000 to reactivate the depleted Employee Assistance Fund so that CUPE 4600 Unit 1 members will continue to receive benefit coverage and can submit any outstanding claims.

The union and the university will meet to discuss ways to ensure CUPE 4600-1 benefits are stable and sustainable, and to devise a plan for any shortfall that might result prior to September 2019.

The university has also agreed to make a contribution of $170,000 to the fund on Sept. 1, 2019.

The above-mentioned financial contributions, as well as the discussion between the union and the university, are on a without prejudice basis.

Benefit Coverage through the Employee Assistance Fund

Carleton University and CUPE 4600 Unit 1 have been made aware that the Employee Assistance Fund, which provides some benefits for CUPE 4600 Unit 1 members, has been depleted at this time.

All members of CUPE 4600 Unit 1 are Carleton students and they have access to insurance coverage through their student association. In some cases, students also receive coverage through their parents’ benefit plans or their own personal plans. The CUPE 4600 Unit 1 collective agreement provides for the Employee Assistance Fund, which is a separate benefit that offers additional coverage for students who are employed by the university as Teaching Assistants.

Consistent with the collective agreement between Carleton University and CUPE 4600 Unit 1, the University paid fixed amounts into the Employee Assistance Fund.

The university met with CUPE 4600 Unit 1 this afternoon, and we are working diligently on a temporary solution to support our students.
