Hackers are increasingly attacking the websites and information technology systems of private companies and public organizations. The good news is that something is now being done about it.
CGI, Bank of Canada, Bell Canada, Security Compass, and the House of Commons are pleased to announce the third annual CyberSCI Mayor’s Cyber Challenge Cup, a cybersecurity (hacking) competition for students in the Ottawa area.
On Saturday, Nov. 17th 2018, students selected from Carleton University, University of Ottawa, Algonquin College, and La Cité will compete in teams to attack a vulnerable computer network, break through the cyber defences, take control of the systems and advise the fictitious company on how to defend against their cyberattack.
The competition for The Mayor’s Cyber Challenge Cup will be kicked off by Mayor Jim Watson and students from the top teams will have the opportunity to interview for fully paid internships with sponsoring companies: CGI, Bell Canada and Bank of Canada. The other sponsors, the House of Commons IT department and Security Compass (a Toronto-based cybersecurity firm), may be there to meet students for potential future opportunities. Support for the event is also being provided by the Carleton University Technology Innovation Management (TIM) program and HackingAway.org.
“The Mayor’s Cyber Challenge Cup is a great opportunity to raise awareness about cyber security, while also providing students with educational and professional opportunities,” said Watson. “I’m proud to once again support this fun and engaging competition that highlights the community’s cybersecurity awareness efforts.”
The Canadian Cyber Security Challenge was founded in 2011 by Tom Levasseur, senior security consultant now with the Bank of Canada, to address the shortage of skilled resources in Canada’s IT security workforce.

Who: Post-secondary undergraduate students from Carleton University, uOttawa, Algonquin College, and La Cité are eligible to compete.
Why: Opportunity to interview in person, after the event, for paid intern jobs in IT security companies for top students in the competition.
