Carleton University is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael F. Charles as Director of the Department of Equity Services, effective March 1, 2019.
“I am so pleased that Michael is joining our team at Carleton,” said President Benoit-Antoine Bacon. “His great expertise and experience will be invaluable to us, and his approach to equity issues will serve our community extremely well.”
Reporting directly to the president, Charles will also carry the title of University Advisor on Equity, to reflect his strategic responsibilities.
Charles joins Carleton from York University, where he served most recently as executive director for the Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion. His service at York includes progressive leadership roles including case resolution advisor and interim director.
Prior to assuming the executive director role at York, he was a principal at Change Dezign Consulting, providing services in the areas of organizational development, leadership development, diversity and inclusion to large organizations in the private, public and non-profit sectors in Canada and the United States.
A graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School with senior experience in private legal practice, he has also served as an education consultant to school boards in Toronto, North York and York Region.
His business and community affiliations include service with Universities Canada, Human Rights Watch (Canada), the Law Society of Upper Canada, Skills for Change, Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (Canada).
