Carleton University will host the launch of the David C. Onley Initiative for Employment and Enterprise Development – a partnership among Ottawa’s post-secondary institutions to develop knowledge, resources and tools supporting students with disabilities in advancing their careers. Envisioned by Carleton’s Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities and the Research, Education, Accessibility and Design Initiative (READ), this two-year, $5-million initiative is funded by Ontario’s Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

The project aims to increase employability and entrepreneurship of post-secondary students with disabilities. It will examine factors contributing to lower rates of employment and strive to boost them by engaging industry, building awareness, fostering entrepreneurial endeavors and developing employment supports in post-secondary institutions. It will assist students through applied research, providing access to employability and entrepreneurship resources, and working with employers to address their capacity to support the needs of employees with disabilities.

The Onley Initiative is directed by Carleton’s READ Initiative in partnership with the University of Ottawa, Algonquin College and La Cité.

When: Monday, Aug. 27, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Where: Second Floor Atrium and Conference Rooms, Richcraft Hall, Carleton University
Info: This event is free and open to the public. Registration is available online. A campus map can be found online.

Media are invited to attend.

The initiative’s namesake, the Honourable David C. Onley, former Ontario lieutenant-governor, will deliver a keynote address. The presidents of the four post-secondary institutions will confirm their commitment to the Onley Initiative partnership with a signing ceremony.

This is the first project contributing to the Education City, an effort to facilitate collaboration through partnerships among the four post-secondary institutions in Ottawa. The initiative will create eight positions – two at each school – dedicated to research and development in disability and career services, as well as two positions – one at Carleton and one at Algonquin – dedicated to the employability of students with autism spectrum disorder.
