The Carleton Initiative for Parliamentary and Diplomatic Engagement will host Promoting Democracy Abroad: What Role for Canadian Legislators?  in partnership with the all-party Democracy Caucus. Guests attending the special panel and reception will include parliamentarians, diplomats and stakeholders.

There will be remarks by Members of Parliament who have recently formed the Democracy Caucus, including Chair Anita Vandenbeld, vice-chairs Elizabeth May and Kennedy Stewart, and Randy Hoback.

The panel will begin with a presentation by Jean-Paul Ruszkowski, chief executive officer of the Parliamentary Centre.

Topics to be discussed will include whether Canada should do more to support democracies through international development assistance; how parliaments can make progress for greater political participation of women; the role of social media and technology in strengthening democratic governance; and lessons Canadian parliaments and legislators can exchange with their international counterparts.

Panelists include:

  • Kevin Deveaux, parliamentary and political party development adviser and former Nova Scotia MLA
  • Peter Dimitroff, senior governance advisor and director of Afghanistan Programs, Development Alternatives Incorporated
  • Jacqueline O’Neill, president, Inclusive Security

The panel will be moderated by Maureen Boyd, director of the Carleton Initiative for Parliamentary and Diplomatic Engagement.
