Carleton University’s Jacqueline Kennelly, associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, will host the conference Coming Up Together: Towards Ending and Preventing Youth Homelessness in Ontario, Canada and Beyond. The event will bring together researchers, policy-makers, community organizations and young people who have been homeless to solve this complex social problem.
This unique conference is the first in a decade to be focused exclusively on youth homelessness in Canada and it has involved young people at all levels of planning.

Visual Arts Showcase
When: Tuesday, Feb. 20 to Thursday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Room 4012, Faculty of Social Sciences Building, University of Ottawa
Info: All pieces of the visual arts showcase have been created by youth with lived experiences of homelessness or at-risk youth. Art will be for sale throughout the conference; all proceeds go directly back to the artists.
Forum Theatre Performance by Partnering for Change
When: Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Where: Room 4007, Faculty of Social Sciences Building, University of Ottawa
Info: The research project Partnering for Change will present a Forum Theatre performance that examines the intersection of disability, education and employment among homeless youth from Toronto, Hamilton and Niagara. This performance was created by young people who have been homeless and who have intellectual, developmental or learning disabilities. The scenes reflect their experiences using social services. Youth participants are available for interviews.
Youth-Led Walking Tours
When: Thursday, Feb. 22 from 12:15p.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Where: Tours begin close to the registration tables, Fourth Floor of the Faculty of Social Sciences Building, University of Ottawa
Info: Ottawa-based young people who have experienced homelessness will lead attendees on a walking tour of the city. They will explore issues like criminalizing public space, the effects of gentrification, survival sex work and the resilience required to live on Ottawa streets.
Three walking tours led by conference participants Corinne, Charlotte and Holly, will be open to the media. Tour leader Charlotte will be available to participate in media interviews following the tour.
Where Do We Go from Here? Session Hosted by A Way Home Canada
When: Thursday, Feb. 22 from 1:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Room 2005, Faculty of Social Sciences Building, University of Ottawa
Info: The facilitated engagement session Where do we go from here? Working together to refine provincial approaches to youth homelessness, hosted by A Way Home Canada, intends to move the conference from talk to action. The stakeholder discussion will seek to refine Ontario’s response to youth homelessness. The session will be introduced by Adam Vaughan, MP for Spadina-Fort York and parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development (Housing and Urban Affairs).
Closing Plenary Panel
When: Thursday, Feb. 22 from 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Where: Room 2005, Faculty of Social Sciences Building, University of Ottawa
Info: The closing panel will discuss lessons learned and address solutions to youth homelessness, ranging from immediate interventions to preventative strategies designed to stop youth homelessness before it begins.
