Carleton University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of Film Studies will host a screening of the Ottawa-based, Second World War film Captains of the Clouds.

The little-known Warner Brothers motion picture was produced in co-operation with the National Film Board of Canada and the Royal Canadian Air Force as part of the Canadian government’s effort to increase support for involvement in the war.

When: Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, doors open at 6 p.m., the film screening begins at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Room 2200, Richcraft Hall Theatre, Carleton
Info: Registration for this event is available online. A campus map can be found here.

Media are invited to attend the event

The film, by Casablanca director Michael Curtiz, stars James Cagney as a rugged but self-interested loner who at first shows no interest in the war effort but is eventually convinced to join the fight. The movie features a cameo appearance by Billy Bishop, flying ace of the First World War.

The film was shot in North Bay, Ont. and Ottawa. It features scenes in Ottawa’s Centretown, the National War Memorial, Parliament Hill, and the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, among other locales.

Prof. Marc Furstenau will introduce Captains of the Clouds with a short presentation of additional film material.
