Carleton University’s Board of Governors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Benoit-Antoine Bacon as its 15th President and Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Bacon will commence his five-year appointment effective July 1, 2018.
The appointment of Dr. Bacon follows an international search process that engaged hundreds of internal and external constituents at Carleton and in the Ottawa community.
“On behalf of the Carleton University community, I am very pleased that our comprehensive search process identified a leader of Benoit’s calibre,’’ said Chris Carruthers, chair of the Board of Governors. “As Carleton begins a new era and its next 75 years, the university community will benefit from the energy and vision that Benoit will bring to the presidency. He is an experienced leader, having worked positions of progressive responsibility at other outstanding universities.
“As Carleton positions itself to respond to a changing university sector and increased competition, Benoit will play a critical leadership role in leading the organization and supporting our students, faculty and staff. On behalf of the Board, I would like to congratulate Benoit and welcome him to the Carleton community.”
An accomplished teacher, researcher and academic administrator, Dr. Bacon will assume his leadership role at Carleton from Queen’s University where he currently serves as Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic).

Prior to Queen’s, he served as Provost and Vice-President (Academic Affairs) at Concordia University in his hometown of Montreal. His first academic appointment was at Bishop’s University where he served in a number of leadership positions including Dean of Arts and Science and Associate Vice-Principal (Research).
Dr. Bacon will assume a tenured appointment at the rank of professor in Carleton’s Department of Psychology. His research specialty is the neurophysiological and cognitive bases of visual perception.
Dr. Bacon succeeds Dr. Alastair Summerlee, who was appointed Interim President and Vice-Chancellor in July, 2017. The Board of Governors and administration extend their appreciation to Dr. Summerlee for his service to the university community during his interim appointment.

Benoit-Antoine Bacon nommé 15e recteur et vice-chancelier de l’Université Carleton
Le Conseil des gouverneurs de l’Université Carleton est heureux d’annoncer la nomination de Benoit-Antoine Bacon au poste de 15e recteur et vice-chancelier de l’Université Carleton. Dr Bacon entrera en fonction le 1er juillet 2018 pour une période de cinq ans.
Sa nomination survient à la suite d’un processus de recherche international ayant mobilisé la participation de centaines d’intervenants internes et externes à Carleton et au sein de la collectivité ottavienne.
« Au nom de la communauté de l’Université Carleton, je suis ravi que notre processus de recherche exhaustif ait permis de faire ressortir un leader du calibre de Benoit, » a déclaré Chris Carruthers, président du Conseil des gouverneurs. « Alors que Carleton entreprend une ère nouvelle et amorce ses 75 prochaines années, la communauté universitaire bénéficiera de la vision de Benoit et du dynamisme qu’il insufflera à son rôle. Il est un leader chevronné, ayant occupé des postes de responsabilité croissante au sein d’autres universités exceptionnelles. »

L’Université Carleton se positionne pour affronter cette réalité et Benoit jouera donc un rôle crucial tant à la barre de l’organisation qu’en soutenant nos étudiants, notre corps professoral et notre personnel. Professeur, chercheur et administrateur universitaire accompli, Dr Bacon entreprendra le rôle de leadership que lui confie Carleton depuis l’Université Queen’s, où il occupe actuellement le poste de provost et de vice-recteur (académique).

Ce sera aussi un grand plaisir de travailler et de vivre dans la capitale nationale, une magnifique ville bilingue », a déclaré Dr Bacon. « J’ai hâte de travailler avec l’ensemble de la communauté afin de tirer parti des forces exceptionnelles de l’Université Carleton et d’accroître encore davantage sa pertinence et son impact à l’échelle nationale et internationale. »
Avant d’entrer en fonction à l’Université Queen’s, Dr Bacon était provost et vice-recteur aux affaires académiques à l’Université Concordia de Montréal, sa ville natale. C’est à l’Université Bishop qu’il a obtenu son premier poste universitaire ainsi que de nombreux autres postes de direction, dont celui de doyen des arts et des sciences et vice-recteur associé (recherche).
Dr Bacon occupera également un poste de professeur permanent au Département de psychologie de l’Université Carleton. Sa spécialité scientifique porte sur les bases neurophysiologiques et cognitives de la perception visuelle.
Dr Bacon succède au Dr Alastair Summerlee, nommé recteur et vice-chancelier intérimaire en juillet 2017. Le Conseil des gouverneurs et l’administration remercient Dr Summerlee pour les services rendus à la communauté universitaire au cours de sa nomination provisoire.
