Science Student Earns Board of Governors Award for Volunteerism

Gabriela Astrain is graduating today with a Bachelor’s in Science Honours (Biochemistry and Biotechnology) and will also be presented with the Board of Governors’ Award at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony. This award recognizes voluntary involvement in the not-for-profit sector and honours non-academic work while pursuing a full-time program of study at Carleton University.

Astrain is being recognized for her significant and consistent volunteerism both at Carleton and in the Ottawa community. Her volunteerism exemplified her passion for helping others. At Carleton, she volunteered in the Science Student Success Centre (SSSC) and as a team co-ordinator for the Kick-Start into Science program, which she spearheaded.

In the Ottawa community, Astrain served as a consistent volunteer at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), at Acceso International, and remains an active volunteer at her former high school.

Astrain demonstrated unparalleled leadership and has balanced volunteering – in addition to many other pursuits – with excellence in her academic studies.
