Carleton Mourns the Death of Former Director of School of Journalism and Communication

Carleton University mourns the passing of Tony Westell, the fourth director of the School of Journalism and Communication.

Westhall died April 1, aged 91. He was described as a husband, father, grandfather, dog lover, small-boat sailor, clear thinker, sharp political analyst, lover of nautical fiction of the Aubrey/Maturin and Hornblower varieties, professor, journalist and author.

After a successful career as an Ottawa reporter and political columnist with publications such as the Globe and Mail and the Star, Westhall worked as a teacher and administrator in Carleton’s journalism
and Canadian studies schools.
