Carleton University is pleased to announce the appointment of Nimal Rajapakse as Vice-President (Research and International) starting Sept. 1, 2015.
Rajapakse is currently Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Professor of Engineering at Simon Fraser University (SFU).
He received his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Civil Engineering from the University of Sri Lanka and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the Asian Institute in Bangkok. He has previously served as head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba, Head of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
Rajapakse is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Horst Leipholz Medal of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship, the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C., the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Visiting Fellowship, and the Special Visiting Professor Award from the Science Without Borders Program of Brazil. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.
He is author of more than 100 papers and is co-author of a textbook on Engineering Mechanics. He serves on the editorial boards of four international journals. He has collaborated with IBM Research, Manitoba Hydro, Atomic Energy Canada Ltd., Ballard and Westport Innovation Inc. He has current and previous research collaborations with universities in Germany, India, China, Thailand, Singapore, Brazil and Sri Lanka.
Rajapakse has successfully attracted significant support for research at both UBC and SFU, developing strong linkages with the City of Surrey, companies in the region, and internationally. He recently established a joint research institute in Big Data between SFU and Zhejiang University in China. Science Without Borders recently awarded him a three-year special visiting professor award to promote collaboration with the Institute of Aerospace Technology of Brazil.
