Two Carleton University researchers, Jacques Albert and Banu Örmeci, have been awarded Strategic Project Grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
Albert, a professor in the Department of Electronics, will receive more than $462,000 for his work on glass fibre laser components. Many laser components, including mirrors and crystals, can now be created using silica fibre. This strategic project grant is aimed at developing a frequency-doubling fibre capable of replacing crystals, and propelling the Canadian industry one step closer to a complete all-fibre laser. Albert will work on this research in collaboration with Christopher Smelser, assistant professor in Carleton’s School of Information Technology, as well as colleagues at Laval University and industrial partner CorActive.
Örmeci, a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will receive $277,000 for her work developing optimization and automation systems for sludge treatment processes. The cost of biosolids treatment is to approximately half of the cost of wastewater treatment. The ultimate goal of this research is to optimize sludge treatment processes, improving their performance while reducing costs and the environmental impacts.
Strategic Project Grants aim to increase research and training in targeted areas that could strongly enhance Canada’s economy, society and/or the environment within the next 10 years.
