Carleton’s Centre for European Studies Lecture: Herman Van Rompuy on “The Future of Europe”

Carleton University’s Centre for European Studies will host a keynote lecture by Herman Van Rompuy, president emeritus of the European Council, on “The Future of Europe.”

About Herman Van Rompuy

Herman Van Rompuy was the 49th prime minister of Belgium from December 2008 to November 2009 and the first full-time president of the European Council, the European Union (EU) body composed of the leaders of all member states, from 2009 to 2014. When the EU won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012, he was one of the EU representatives to accept the prize on the EU’s behalf. In 2014, he won the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen for his role at the EU. In 2015, King Philip of Belgium granted him the title of Count. He is currently a professor at the universities of Leuven, Louvain, the College of Europe in Brussels, and the Paris Institute of Political Studies. He is also president of the European Policy Centre. He holds 13 honorary doctorates from multiple universities. Van Rompuy is an honorary citizen in five countries, and has written more than 12 publications.

Van Rompuy will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at Carleton’s Fall Convocation on November 18, 2017 in recognition of his extraordinary  contributions to world peace through the arts of compromise and consensus, his fine scholarship and writing, and his much celebrated work in international economic governance, and national and global political leadership.

This event is co-hosted by the Centre for European Studies (Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence), the Office of the President of Carleton University and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium.
