In response to the rapidly changing world of online journalism and multi-platform reporting, Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication is announcing a new Bachelor of Media Production and Design (BMPD) for the 2018-‘19 school year.
The honours degree program will be the first in Canada, drawing on elements from two of Carleton’s most successful programs: journalism and information technology/interactive multimedia and design.
“This degree will combine storytelling and the explanatory skills required in journalism with the design thinking and online production skills rooted in information technology programs,” said Chris Waddell, director of the Bachelor of Media Production and Design degree program. “Collectively, these skills can turn ideas into informative online content.”
The degree will prepare students to innovate and operate across all facets of narrative that engage, inform, entertain and ultimately contribute to a broader and deeper understanding of how we connect with each other in the 21st century.
At the same time as students are introduced to and master the editorial and technical skills, they will develop their theoretical knowledge and understanding of the power of “story” through coursework steeped in ethics, law, civic institutions and citizen interactions via policy.
A combination of intensive hands-on workshops and lecture courses will give students a strong foundation in data, research, writing and narrative abilities across media formats (text, photography, audio, video and graphics). The program will only accept 30 students for the 2018-‘19 school year to allow for constant feedback. Co-op opportunities will be available between third and fourth year.
The Carleton School of Journalism and Communications is the oldest in the country and has produced graduates who work at major media outlets across Canada and around the world.
