Carleton Professor Awarded $600,000 to Improve 5G Wireless Networks

Carleton Prof. Richard Yu has received a $600,000 Strategic Partnership Grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to improve technology supporting 5G wireless networks.

The project will address existing research challenges in order to make innovative 5G wireless networks more efficient and effective. With improved technology, the widespread deployment of these networks will be commercially viable. The results of this research will support the growth of Canada’s information and communications technology industry.

“This grant is building on the strengths of my research on 5G wireless technologies in the past and then looking for strategic directions in the future,” said Yu. Yu is cross-appointed to the School of Information Technology and Department of Systems and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Design.

“Carleton has always prioritized innovation and excellence in academic research,” said Rafik Goubran, acting vice-president (Research and International). “The announcement of the NSERC grant today for Prof. Yu’s project reflects this commitment. This project will advance Canada’s expertise in 5G wireless networks and will support future innovations in the Canadian communications industry.”

Carleton is leading the project, which is a collaborative effort involving other Canadian universities and many industry partners.

Yu’s project, one of 94 Strategic Partnership Grants announced nationwide, will complement Carleton’s broad-ranging research in 5G wireless communications technologies as they relate to autonomous and connected vehicles, sensor technologies, health care and the Internet of Things.

“Wireless technologies have never been more vital to our society than they are today”, said Fred Afagh, acting dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design. “Professor Yu’s research will help to enhance 5G wireless networking and its integration into new and emerging technologies.”
