Carleton Student Receives Australian International Student of the Year Award for Community Engagement

Bruce Smith, a Carleton commerce student with a major in international business who is taking part in an international exchange program with the University of South Australia, received the Governor’s International Student Award for community engagement. This award is part of a series presented by the Governor of South Australia to international students who have excelled in various categories, including arts, sports, academics and community engagement. There are over 31,000 international students in South Australia, and these awards are designed to celebrate excellence in the group.

“Winning this award is a great honour and I would like to thank everyone who helped motivate me to succeed along the way,” said Smith. “I could not have accomplished this without the loving support of my friends, my family and everyone who welcomed and cared for me in Australia. Studying here has been an incredible experience that has changed me for the better. It’s an experience that I’ll never forget. I am truly blessed.”

Smith has kept himself very busy working in the community. He works with the Edge Assist Street Care Team to reach out to people and show them someone genuinely cares. He is also a leader with the Edge Kids program through his church.

In addition, Smith volunteers with the Childhood Cancer Association of South Australia to recruit volunteers for the fundraising team and contribute to fundraising efforts.  He works part time with Study Adelaide as an International Student Ambassador marketing South Australia as a study destination for international students.

“The exchange experience enables students to travel, learn, connect and grow,” said Chau Hoang, co-ordinator of Carleton’s exchange program. “Participating in an exchange program provides opportunities within the classroom as well as within the community and overseas experience is highly valued by potential employers.”
