Carleton University, in partnership with the Embassy of Mexico, presented a flash opera today featuring Ópera Ambulante De Tijuana, or the roaming opera of Tijuana, an ensemble of classical vocalists from Tijuana’s cultural centre “CECUT.”
Carleton’s Galleria was the stage for the group of highly trained performers as they delivered their renditions of opera classics. It came out of the blue and delighted a large crowd of students changing classes, as well as staff and faculty.
“We are grateful to the Ambassador of Mexico for the wonderful performance given by Ópera Ambulante,” said Roseann O’Reilly Runte, president and vice-chancellor at Carleton. “We have a rich and diverse cultural mix of students and cultural experiences like this one expand and enrich the lives of all who live and work on campus.”
The young opera ensemble was formed in 2010 with the intention of bringing classical opera vignettes to unconventional spaces unrelated to the operatic experience. Two years after the group’s founding, the ensemble has won widespread recognition among audiences in Tijuana, other Mexican states and now in Canada. They are quickly becoming true ambassadors of the culture of Tijuana.
The operatic ensemble blended into the crowd wearing Carleton T-shirts and uniforms before breaking into song and amazing the students, who quickly gathered to enjoy the impromptu performance.
