Carleton University Kicks Off the New School Year with an Orientation Week to Welcome Students

Starting Saturday, Sept. 1, Carleton University students will be treated to a variety of events and activities aimed at helping them start the school year on the right foot.

Events planned for new and returning students include:

Residence Move-In

Fall Orientation volunteers assist first-year residence students to move in. Volunteers help students carry students’ belongings to their residence rooms to ensure move-in is quick and efficient.

Note: Carleton President, Roseann Runte will be in attendance, welcoming new students from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Parent Reception

The Parent Reception is an opportunity to gather with staff, faculty members and other parents to celebrate the launch of the academic year.

Official Opening

This marks the beginning of Orientation Week events, with welcome messages from key Carleton community members.

Success Workshops and Survival U Play

Students attend a Student Success Workshop and a theater play by Sock ‘n’ Buskin titled “Survival U.” Both address common issues first-year students encounter and highlight appropriate resources students can utilize on campus.

NBC Stand Up for Diversity

Students will attend a comedy show featuring three comedians from NBC’s Stand Up for Diversity program, which aims to showcase the talent of diverse performers.

K’NAAN Concert

K’NAAN will perform at this year’s annual Fall Orientation concert. K’NAAN has received several JUNO awards and is widely known for his song “Waving Flag” which was selected as the World Cup theme.

Academic Orientation

This event enables new students to become accustomed to academia at Carleton. It includes a BBQ, open houses for faculty and degree programs and the New Student Convocation. This exciting event provides students with a sneak-peek into graduation and includes a regalia-filled procession, a speech from the president and an inspirational guest speaker.

Expo Carleton

Student groups will have the opportunity to showcase and present their campus club, society or service to first-year students.

Carleton’s Got Talent & MTV’s The Buried Life

Carleton’s Got Talent will provide a venue for student groups to perform during Fall Orientation and showcase their group to first-year students. Groups compete for the title of “Most Talented Campus Group” and $500 of additional club funding. Immediately following the contest, MTV’s The Buried Life will be performing a 90-minute inspirational showcase about making the most out your university experience.

Note: Carleton President, Roseann Runte will be on the judging panel from 8:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Shine Day

Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser involving schools from across the nation raising money for cystic fibrosis. Carleton’s goal this year is to raise $50,000.

For live footage, we recommend targeting both Bank Street and Sunnyside Avenue. We can arrange to have an event co-ordinator meet you onsite. Please call to arrange.
