First Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology Kicks Off

Carleton University is partnering to hold the first Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology, the largest-ever evolution and ecology conference.  More than 2,300 scientists from 45 countries will converge on the Ottawa Convention Centre between July 6 and July 10, 2012 to discuss their latest research. Andrew Simons, a biology professor at Carleton, took a leading role in organizing Carleton’s sponsorship of  the event, along with the University of Ottawa, the Oxford University Press and more.

Kids’ Event at the Canadian Museum of Nature
An opportunity for children of all ages to mingle with scientists, including members of the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution, and to learn what it is to be a biologist.  The museum’s regular admission price applies.

David Quammen – Boswelling the Biologist: From the Congo to the Virosphere
This is a free public lecture.

When: Friday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Canada Hall, Ottawa Convention Centre

Quammen is the winner of the 2012 Stephen J. Gould Prize and author of Song of the Dodo.


Dr. Rosie Redfield – Arsenic, Social Media and the Origin of Life
This is a free public lecture.

When: Sunday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Where:
Canada Hall, Ottawa Convention Centre

Redfield is a professor at the University of British Columbia and one of Nature Magazine’s 10 people who mattered this year.
Carleton researchers will also figure heavily in a workshop entitled Communicating science to society, which will be hosted by Peter Calamai, adjunct professor of journalism and communication, and Richard Webster, PhD candidate in biology. It will feature speakers including Tom Sherratt, professor of biology at Carleton; Carl Zimmer, New York Time columnist; Penny Park, producer of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks; Elizabeth Howell, Ottawa Business Journal columnists and freelance science journalist; and Tim Lougheed, freelance science journalist.

This lecture is open to conference attendees only.
