Six Carleton students have received Ontario Volunteer Service Awards in the Youth category. They were nominated by Carleton’s Student Experience Office for their years of dedicated service during Carleton’s annual Orientation activities.
“It was quite an honour to hear that I had been nominated,” said Sara Pieroni, a recent English and sociology graduate. “I never expected any recognition for the volunteer work I did because I did it for the love of my school. I think school spirit is important for students to feel connected to where they are spending the next four years of their lives.”
The award honours individual volunteers for continuous years of commitment and dedicated service to an organization. Volunteers in the Youth category must be under the age of 24 and have dedicated their time to an organization for two or more years.
“One of the best parts of volunteering is watching someone you welcomed to Carleton take on leadership roles within the university community,” said James Craig, a recent public affairs and policy management graduate. “The number of my former frosh who are now active volunteers makes me so proud!
Although they’ve already been recognized for their dedication, many of the continuing students are already planning next year’s volunteer activities.
“I work closely with Shinerama, a national campaign that raises money for cystic fibrosis research,” said fourth-year commerce student Charlie Nielsen. “This year we have set a goal of raising $50,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. We are organizing many secondary fundraising campaigns throughout the summer, and we’ll be holding our annual Shine Day during Fall Orientation.”
All of the award winners are aware or the importance of their work in fostering a spirit of community at Carleton.
“I volunteer for Fall Orientation Week because I love the program and think that it is vital to new students’ success at Carleton University,” said fourth-year commerce student Grace Valentine. “Being recognized for my contribution is an honour and I am very appreciative of this award.”
